EACC Recovers Assets Worth Ksh.3.8B, Says 214 Corruption Cases Still In Court

While unveiling the 2022-2023 report on the commission's achievements on Tuesday, EACC said it is going for another tranche of asset recovery amounting to over Ksh.8 billion.

The anti-corruption body said despite hurdles in its pursuit of corruption cartels, it has made strides in the past one year.

It noted that 5,252 corruption reports were presented to the commission, of which 1,968 of them were squarely under the anti-graft agency’s armpits.

“We were able to handle 5,000 corruption cases in one year, we also look at high and low-impact cases,” said EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak.

In the 2022-2023 EACC report, 74 corruption files were recommended for prosecution, 97 files were forwarded to ODPP, and 22 files were recommended for closure.

In the period under review, the commission recovered assets worth Ksh.3.8 billion shillings, with 214 cases still pending in court.

In its quest for more, EACC said it has already traced an additional Ksh.6.6 billion worth of assets in 40 cases presented to the court.

It stated that 62 suits have already been filed in court, with the anti-corruption body seeking to have assets worth Ksh.8.7 billion that include land returned to the public.

EACC has since written to all heads of institutions, ministries and county governments to uphold the highest standards of integrity as it seeks to tighten its war on graft.

“We have written to all Governors, we have written to all those heading public institutions,” said EACC Chairman Bishop David Oginde.

The commission however noted that it is still grappling with a limited workforce affecting its delivery.
